What makes SYC a unique camping experience?

SYC aims to create an annual mountain top experience for young people as they wrestle with who God is and make decisions to follow him. More, it provides opportunities to explore what living for Jesus means after making this initial decision and exploring their leadership opportunities.

Not just a conference, SYC brings together youth from all over NSW/ACT to live in community with each other. For the four days of camp, each youth group is placed in one of four tribes. These tribes are small communities where the young people camp in the same area, do activities, and learn scripture together as part of the memory verse challenge. More, our village space is a laid back opportunity for everyone to hang out, grab a coffee, play some games and eat meals together. The natural community that forms from constantly being around young people from across NSW/ACT over the weekend is astounding.

We also aim to make it as simple as possible for youth leaders.  Youth camps are great places for young people to have a moment with Jesus, but often, the organizational elements of running a youth camp takes leaders away from the discipleship space where their youth need them to be. At SYC we take care of all of that for you, so you can be right there walking alongside your young people answering their questions, praying with them and helping them to take the next step in their journey with Jesus.

What does the cost of SYC cover?

  • All meals Saturday, Sunday, and Breakfast on Monday
  • Six Teaching and Worship Sessions

How can we lower the cost to help our young people afford SYC?

At SYC, we try our best to balance the cost of providing an amazing experience for the young people with the cost-of-living pressures that we know families are facing.

To help with this, we have discounts available for multiple siblings and have a financial support program available to assist individual youth. We also know that youth groups have had great success partnering with their wider community and holding fundraisers to subsidise the cost. We would love to help you explore what opportunities are out there to support your group coming to camp financially, so please reach out to us.

What if our youth group doesn’t have camping gear?

We’ve got your tent covered too! If you don’t have access to the required equipment or you want to give SYC a go before making the decision to purchase tents, we can hire tents for your group. We also know that while your young people might not have the gear, there has been great success asking the wider church to borrow camping equipment that you might want to explore.

What if we only have a small youth group?

Big groups come to camp, small groups come to camp. The smallest group we have had on camp consisted of two leaders with one young person. The great thing about SYC is that while individually, a smaller youth group might not be able to run their own camp, SYC provides a place for these churches to still offer the mountain top peak Christian camping experience to their young people. We have the ability to buddy smaller groups up with others in their region so they can camp together. Many groups already do this, and we’d love to help you do this too.

How many leaders do we need to bring?

At a minimum each group needs to come with at least two leaders – one male and one female. The guide then is to have 1 additional leader for every 10 young people.

What safe church requirements are there for leaders?

Every adult on camp needs to provide their WWCC for verification and are expected to have completed Creating Safe Spaces Training in their local church.

Do the leaders we bring have to be youth leaders?

Not at all. Youth parents can lead, other adults from your church can lead. Provided they fulfill the safe church requirements to attend, and you recognize them as being competent people to supervise your young people at SYC, they can come with you as leaders.

What if our leaders have small children they would like to bring?

SYC celebrates the variety of leaders that come alongside young people each week at youth group. As such, we openly invite all leaders to join us at SYC including those that have small children. We ask that they be registered separately on the SYC Children 11 & Under  registration page and ask that these children be supervised by their parents at all times while at camp.

What Leadership Development Opportunities does SYC offer to Young People?

SYC offers a safe environment for young people to explore their leadership giftings. From onstage opportunities for prayer and Bible reading, to tribe leading opportunities, young people are invited to take part in ways that are useful to them.

Each year we host a special Seniors Lunch for Year 11s & 12s as an opportunity for them to share their experiences, ask questions of leaders in our Baptist Association and pray with each other. We also encourage youth groups to utilise the leadership giftings of their young people in appropriate ways.

For Young Adults we provide leadership development opportunities for those who volunteer and to our youth leaders as well as part of the larger church program. We also encourage those finishing year 12 to consider volunteering as well.

Our youth group already has a camp this year, how can we make SYC work for our young people?

We have some churches that offer multiple camps to their young people each year. Some of these groups bring all their young people to SYC and their other camp, while others see SYC as an opportunity to target a specific group (e.g. Juniors or Seniors) for more intentional discipleship and focus. Some Youth Leaders value the Leadership Development aspects of SYC and run SYC as their additional camp for their Year 10-12, while others enjoy the activities and make SYC their Year 7-9 camp.

Another option is to have your group take advantage of the single or double day passes to join part of camp.

There is also the REVIVE @ SYC event on the Saturday night of camp that any church within an hour of Wyong can attend as well.

What if our church doesn’t have a youth group, but we have young people?

SYC is a great opportunity to provide a camping event for the young people of your church even if there is no official youth group. There is no minimum number of young people required to bring a group. All you need to do is have one male and one female adult/leader* for the first ten youth that come and then an additional adult/leader for every ten young people after this.

*note all leaders are required to provide a valid WWCC and have completed their churches safe ministry screening.

Can we still come if we’re not part of a Baptist Church?

Absolutely!

SYC is an initiative run by the Baptist Association of NSW/ACT, however any church that would like to bring their young people along are more than welcome to register.
